For a learning experience that keeps you one step ahead

Introduction

Following the ever growing need to develop skills and acquire knowledge, whilst moving from traditional classroom training towards a distance learning environment, APBS offers in this catalogue a range of e-Learning courses on several subjects. The e-Learning modules aim to provide you in the most effective and learner-centered way, with a clear understanding of various topics. In addition to the clearly structured content the e-Learning modules offer you a glossary, reading materials, background documents, links and plenty opportunity for interaction and self-evaluation.
In addition to the open enrolment e-Learning modules presented in this catalogue, APBS through its partnership with ATLAS can deliver – in various languages – tailor-made e-Learning or blended learning courses, fitting the specific needs of the customer.
We help you to meet your training challenges!

1. A clear and user-friendly presentation of materials:

    • The content is clearly structured and there is constant access to navigation bars and the table of content;
    • The content is enriched by images, graphics, physical objects to represent abstract concepts, animations as well as a personalised and active voice, which presents the materials in an easy to understand language;
    • All features of the e-Modules (e.g. content, structure, navigation, etc.) are designed to generate an intuitive grasp of how the e-Module is to be operated – if more clarification is required a ‘help’ function is available throughout the entire e-Module;

2. Entry and exit self-evaluation tests with corrective feedback:

  • The purpose of the entry test is to stimulate the participant to actively consider the topic of the e-Module and to assess the level of pre-existing knowledge;
  • The exit test is there to allow the participant (and e-Module organisers) to verify their understanding of what has been studied and assess how well the participant has internalised the content;
  • The corrective feedback linked to the exit test enables subsequent and additional learning and allows the participant to adjust their understanding in light of the feedback

Certificated Programs

IMIST (International Minimum Industry Safety Training) is an OPITO standard which supports the global Oil and Gas Industry to meet safety initiative targets.

  • IMIST has been developed to provide a new global standard for Health and Safety training, which will provide a comprehensive and consistent level of training across the world and enhance work force safety and compliance.
  • The IMIST standard ensures that workers have the necessary safety awareness and training to reduce risk and ultimately reduce the number of incidents.
  • Significant cost savings and ease of recruitment are also expected, as IMIST will reduce the need to continually repeat and duplicate training.
  • IMIST is currently available in 10 languages; American and UK English, Arabic, Hindi, Bahasa Malaysian, French, Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian and Russian.

IMIST online is an interactive e-Learning training programme that works by assessing the safety knowledge of an oil and gas worker during a random sequence of assessment questions. At the end of this assessment, which is completed under time-bound conditions, the programme will automatically and dynamically assemble a unique course for each individual based on their knowledge gaps identified in the pre-assessment. The candidate is then presented with this content and the relevant summative assessment questions. This process is repeated until the candidate has managed to answer all the assessment questions correctly. A 100% pass mark is required to complete the IMIST programme.

Mechanical Integrity Certificate

  • Mechanical joints have the potential to cause serious injury and hydrocarbon releases
  • Serious incidents and accidents can occur during construction, maintenance, disassembly and steady-state operations
  • Competence related failures are one of the main causes of incidents, and may lead to major accidents

As a result of this, there is a strong desire within the Oil and Gas Industry to improve the safety performance of such operations. To achieve this aim, a work group was established to produce this Mechanical Joint Integrity Competence code of practices. To address this ECITB in collaboration with Step Change in Safety in Aberdeen has introduced a new method of training and validating skills in the specialist critical bolting area for the Oil and Gas Industry. To confirm the individual’s current skills, knowledge and ability the ECITB technical competence validation test is undertaken every 3 years to prove ongoing performance development. In preparation for the technical test the individual should undertake a short computer based training module to refresh their job knowledge.

Core Content:

  • Module 1: Introduction to Mechanical Joint Integrity
  • Module 2: Principles of the Equipment and Technology

Module 1: Overview of the Oil and Gas Industry

Today’s world cannot function or exist without oil and gas. Define and understand oil and gas value chains, business strategy questions within oil and gas and evolutionary forces that have impacted oil and gas within the last century.

Module 2: Politics and Energy

Further your knowledge of politics and energy as they are forever intertwined. Understand value in terms of national security and wealth, corporate stakeholder types and interests of government and corporations.

Module 3: Access, Exploration and Fiscal Regimes

Define the oil project life cycle including access, exploration and fiscal regimes. Oil and gas companies working in the upstream need to find oil and gas to sustain their business model and continue project development. Understand the types of access and ownership and recognize the role reserves play in the industry.

Module 4: Developing Oil and Gas Projects

Learn the fundamentals of developing oil and gas projects from a business management perspective in a global economy. Understand and enhance your knowledge in the phases of a development project, key business tasks, rate of products, utilization, how to manage various contractor relationships and safety concerns.

Module 5: Production of Oil and Gas Projects

The production of oil and gas is the manufacturing side of upstream. Keep the product available and the costs as low as possible to increase your competitive advantage. Determine upstream costs, field reinvestment and renewal, contractor supply chains, partnership management, political risk, innovation and technology.

Module 6: The Market for Crude Oil

Understand the ever-changing market and pricing structures of crude oil. Nobody can predict the price of oil, but understanding the costs associated with it will help you develop your benchmark. Crude oil is a commodity, and this module will help you better understand the essential fundamentals of supply and demand of crude oil.

Module 7: Transportation of Oil & Gas

Learn about the transportation of oil and gas. Identify transportation modes; understand pipeline basics, and the various methods of transport from wells to refineries including barges, trucks, barrels and tankers.

Downstream

Module 8: Refining

Crude oil does not have value until it is run through a refinery. Discuss the process of refining, and how the fundamentals of downstream are historically less profitable than upstream. Understand refinery basics, cost management techniques, the difference between independent and integrated refiners and the components of the refining process.

Module 9: Petroleum Products

The global economy runs on petroleum products. Learn about motor fuel channels to market, the retail price of motor fuels and fuel standard and specifications. Using this information, develop your understanding of price fluctuations in the market.

Module 10: Petrochemicals & The Future

Discuss petrochemicals and their abundance. The products from petrochemicals touch everyone’s lives many times every day. Define the stages of petrochemical production, commodity chemicals and specialty chemicals. You will also further understand the structure of the industry and factors in profitability. Discover and understand the future of the oil and gas industry. Review the topics discussed and gain an understanding of peak oil demand, non-petroleum based competitors and emerging markets. You will also focus on new entrants in the industry, and availability of capital. The Certificate in Global Oil & Gas Management will provide you with the foundation knowledge of the industry and how you can utilize the information provided to enhance the competitive edge of your organization
